There was early speculation this morning that the Twitter outage was yet another case of growing pains with the Twitter infrastructure simply not being able to keep up with the load associated with their rapid growth. However, today’s outage is happening at the same time a new version of the Koobface malware was found in the wild. This malware is using both Twitter and Facebook messages to send invitations that are designed to lure potential victims to fake anti-virus web pages. The speculation is that the onslaught of bogus messages that are directing users to malicious pages may in fact be overwhelming Twitter.

When a recipient of a fake Twitter message clicks on the embedded link, they arrive at a fake Facebook page that contains a video. When the user selects to view the video, they are told that in order to view the video, they have to install a new Adobe Flash Player. If they select to install the new software, they are actually downloading and installing malware. Clicking on links on Twitter has been the largest security hole. This comes back to basic email, Twitter and blogging security practices - do not click on links that come from untrusted sources.
